My mom, Oretha Hagin, went home to be with the Lord on June 28, 2007. I thank God for her and the godly example she set in our home. Mom was a portrait of a godly mother. I am proud to be her son. She taught my sis and me endurance by her example. Maybe that’s where I get my tenacity. Throughout her life, she faithfully obeyed God. There were many hardships, but I watched her stand in those hard places.
In the early years when my dad traveled a lot, Mom never complained and never allowed us children to complain. There were many lonely hours while he was gone. A lot of responsibilities and decisions fell on her shoulders. Besides that, she had a pretty strong-willed, strong-headed teenaged boy she had to pray a lot for!
Mom knew what it meant to endure hardness as a good soldier (2 Tim. 2:3). She taught us to stand strong in the face of all obstacles. Mom taught us to be faithful. Faithfulness was a hallmark in her life. I remember her saying, “Kids, don’t worry about the sacrifice. If we stay true to God’s call, we will be blessed in the end.”
I think mothers are the most special people in the world. I am grateful for the example my mom set in my life. It made me who I am today.
On Mother’s Day, show your mother how special she is. Call her if she’s far away. If she is close by, give her flowers and take her out to eat. Perhaps your mother isn’t alive today. I encourage you to reflect on the valuable lessons she taught you.
